Oral Health and How it Affects Dental Health

In our practice, we've noticed that, for some folks, dental health is not always a priority. We can't emphasize enough the impact dental health can have on your current state of health. Dental health also can serve as indicator of additional health problems that might otherwise go undetected.

Areas impacted by dental health include the following:

Proper Nutrition - Missing teeth and dental pain can cause difficult and painful chewing, and thus do not encourage consumption of healthy foods.

Heart Health - A high degree of plaque build up and gum disease are linked to many heart-related problems, including:

  • Clogged arteries
  • Heart disease
  • Bacterial infections of the heart (endocarditis)

Diabetes - Diabetics have more trouble controlling blood sugar and insulin levels if they have poor dental health. Diabetics are also at greater risk for dry mouth, cavities and gum disease.

Infections in the Body - Infection of the teeth and gums can spread to other parts of the body, causing serious complications.

Pregnancy - Gum disease is connected to low birth weight and early births. Bacteria in the bloodstream from gum infection can travel into your baby's bloodstream.

If you are in the Phoenix, Mesa or Scottsdale, Arizona region and would like to make dental health a priority in your life, please call 480-834-6991 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lesueur or Dr. Dodaro today.
