Orthodontics has become a rite of passage for children in this country. In fact, some kids are terribly disappointed when they discover that they won’t need braces. While braces for kids are commonplace, more and more of their parents are also seeking straighter teeth. In 2008, over 1 million adults were in braces, up 24% from 1996. Is it merely vanity driving these numbers or are braces really necessary for kids and adults?
While straight teeth make for a nice appearance, the advantages of orthodontic treatment go well beyond the surface. Straightening teeth early in life may help to prevent dental problems and TMJ/TMD issues later in life. Timely intervention can also prevent the loss of teeth that used to be so widely accepted as a part of orthodontic treatment many years ago.
Even if you had braces when young or if you never needed them – chances are you may as an adult. Teeth, particularly the bottom teeth, keep moving throughout our lives. When teeth move and overlap each other cleaning becomes very difficult leading to periodontal disease and decay. While our grandparents expected to end their lives with dentures because of these problems, patients today want alternatives. They want to improve their appearance as well as their dental health.
Fortunately, there are many ways to improve your appearance by straightening your teeth without living with "tinsel teeth." While traditional metal braces are common, more and more patients are opting for Invisalign. This is a system of clear trays that fit over your teeth and are worn for a prescribed amount of time. They are removable for eating and cleaning your teeth. The Invisalign system is barely noticeable when worn and moves your teeth gradually, giving you a straight, beautiful smile.
For patients who are seeking instant gratification, Phoenix, Arizona cosmetic dentists, Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer porcelain veneers, often referred to as “instant orthodontics. Your teeth will not be truly straightened, but they will look straight.

Dental insurance can help a great deal when you’re faced with a bill for extensive dental work. However, it's important to know just what your policy will cover and what it won’t.
Dental insurance typically classifies various procedures as "mandatory" and "elective." Mandatory procedures are those that need to be done to maintain your dental health. Preventive dental care, like twice-yearly cleanings, yearly fluoride treatments, and periodic X-rays, are often covered by a dental plan. Fillings, crowns, and other treatments for cavities are usually at least partially covered.
Procedures considered to be elective, however, often are not covered, or are covered at a substantially lower rate than mandatory procedures. Much cosmetic dentistry worked is considered to be elective, so if you're considering cosmetic dentistry, be sure to consult with your insurance company to find out how much, if any, of the cost will be covered.
Procedures often considered to be elective include:
Because every insurance policy is different, be sure to ask about your coverage before undergoing a cosmetic procedure.
