Dental Lasers and what it can do

Lasers have revolutionized dentistry, reducing pain, making procedures safer and more precise, allowing us to preserve more of your natural tooth, and speeding the healing process.

Lasers are man-made, high-energy light beams unlike other types of light. Their light waves travel in a parallel formation, directional, which creates a very precise focus. In contrast, think of your car’s headlights or a flashlight – they scatter light widely. Compare that to a classroom pointer, which makes a very small dot of light wherever it is directed. Dental lasers have a far smaller focus than a classroom pointer so that microscopically tiny pieces of tissue can be targeted, and the surrounding tissue left untouched.

Each laser is made at a certain frequency, a vibrational speed, which is another way of saying that each laser is a single color. White light contains all colors, but a laser is a specific color, and some are outside our range of color vision, being infrared or ultraviolet.

Gum recontouring
Gum recontouring used to be performed with a scalpel. It carried a high risk of infection and caused significant swelling and bleeding. Laser gum recontouring is much more precise, causes less trauma to your gums, and the laser seals the gum tissue as it goes, so there is virtually no bleeding or chance of infection.

Gum treatment
Lasers are also used to removed plaque and bacteria from around and under your gums to treat gum disease.

Cavities
Lasers are now used to remove decay when preparing your teeth for fillings, crowns, and other restorations. The precision of the laser means that more of the healthy part of your tooth is preserved. There is no scraping and digging around in your tooth, so the procedure and recovery are more comfortable.

Tooth shaping
Hard tissue lasers can be used to reshape tooth enamel and improve the appearance of your teeth.

Tooth whitening
Lasers are sometimes used to activate the gel used in tooth whitening and speed up the process, giving you white, bright teeth in one short office visit.
