Replacing Metal Fillings
Why should I replace metal fillings?
There are a number of reasons to consider replacing metal fillings such as protecting a tooth from further damage, restoring a natural-looking appearance, and helping prevent potentially harmful substances from entering the bloodstream.
What are Metal Fillings?
Metal fillings cannot bond to the tooth. This means a large amount of healthy enamel must be removed before they can be placed. This larger hole gives your dentist room to pack the metal amalgam deep into the tooth, allowing it to expand to fill the hole and secure it in place as it hardens.
Temperature fluctuations in the mouth have an impact on metal, so every hot or cold item you consume causes these fillings to expand and contract. Over time, this can allow metal fillings to come loose and fall out or, worse still, crack or break the tooth from the inside. This alone is reasons enough for many people to consider removing old fillings and replace with stronger and more attractive tooth colored options.
What are Tooth Colored Fillings ?
Tooth colored fillings are made of a composite resin that will bond to the surface of the tooth. This bonding prevents bacteria from entering the dental cavity and helps ensure healthy enamel remains in place.
Tooth colored fillings do not change shape with temperature fluctuations. This prevents these fillings from coming loose, falling out, or cracking/breaking the tooth. What’s more, these restorations have the same shade to match the tooth in color, helping ensure seamless and attractive appearance.
