NuCalm vs. Sedation: What’s the Difference?

Woman looking relaxed and closing eyes in dental chair after receiving anxiety treatment. If you tend to feel anxious at the dentist, routine visits can feel harder than they should. At Drs of Smiles in Mesa, Dr. Glenn LeSueur offers relaxation options, including dental sedation and NuCalm, a drug-free relaxation system available at our office.

Dr. LeSueur has trained at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and regularly completes continuing education to stay current on newer dental materials and procedures, including dental anxiety treatments. The difference between our offerings comes down to how they help you relax, how they affect awareness, and what recovery looks like afterward.

What Is NuCalm?

NuCalm is a relaxation system that does not rely on sedative medication. It combines calming audio, noise-dampening headphones, light-blocking glasses, and other tools to help you feel less anxious.

You might like NuCalm if you want to feel more relaxed at your dental appointments but prefer a drug-free option.

What Is Dental Sedation?

Sedation dentistry uses medication or inhaled gas to help reduce anxiety during dental treatment. At Drs of Smiles, we offer nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide is breathed in through a small mask. It works quickly and wears off faster than many other sedation options, so patients usually remain conscious, calm, and able to respond during treatment.

Other types of sedation may work differently:

  • Oral sedation usually involves taking a prescribed medication before the visit, which can make you feel drowsy but not fully unconscious. We do not currently offer oral sedation at Drs of Smiles.
  • IV sedation is delivered through a vein and can create a deeper level of relaxation, though it is not the same as general anesthesia for most dental visits. IV sedation is not provided in-office, though we can discuss referral options when needed.

How NuCalm and Sedation Differ

The main difference is whether medication is involved. NuCalm is drug-free relaxation. Sedation uses medication or gas to change how relaxed you feel during treatment.

Other differences may include:

  • Recovery time: There’s no recovery period from NuCalm. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, while other sedatives can take longer.
  • Level of relaxation: Sedation may be better for patients with stronger dental anxiety or longer procedures.
  • Awareness: With NuCalm, you remain alert. With mild sedation, you are still conscious but more relaxed.
  • Transportation needs: Some stronger sedation options may require a ride home. Nitrous oxide usually wears off faster, but your dentist will explain what applies to your visit.
