What is Oil Pulling?

Oil pulling is a method of detoxifying the mouth for optimal oral hygiene. This ancient ayurvedic technique uses vegetable oil to bind toxins and bacteria – including streptococcus mutans, the bacteria responsible for dental cavities and gingivitis – for complete removal from the oral cavity. Traditionally, oil pulling has been done with coconut oil which has antimicrobial properties and is able to coat the teeth, helping prevent plaque buildup.

If you live in or around Mesa, Arizona and have questions about maintaining peak oral health, contact Dr. Scott LeSueur and Dr. Charles Dodaro online or by calling (480) 834-6991 to schedule your next routine appointment.

Once a Day for a Week

Oil pulling requires one tablespoon of coconut oil be swished vigorously in the mouth for 10 to 20 minutes each day. This can help freshen breath, decrease gum inflammation, and even whiten teeth. It may be beneficial to try oil pulling every day for a week, but even once or twice a month can make a difference.

Of course, oil pulling should not be seen as an alternative to brushing, flossing, and visiting our dentists every six months for professional cleanings. It can, however, help you maintain a clean and healthy mouth when added to your normal dental hygiene routine.
