What is the purpose of a dental crown?

- Protection. A tooth that has been significantly damaged or has undergone root canal therapy may require additional care to protect it from further trauma. A dental crown sits over the tooth and can offer that extra layer of protection against breakage.
- Replacement. A dental crown might be made to act as a replacement tooth when it is integrated with a dental implant. A dental implant is a titanium post that is placed into the smile with an abutment that rests above the gumline. The crown is made to fit over the abutment and serves as a false tooth.
- Strength. A tooth that has a large cavity or is weakened with root canal therapy needs strength to ensure it functions at its best. Dental crowns are made of porcelain, a strong material that can withstand normal chewing and biting forces and can strengthen teeth that may otherwise become damaged.
- Bridge fabrication. Dental crowns may be used along with false teeth called pontics to create dental bridges. Dental bridges use adjacent teeth surrounding a lost tooth space to fill the gap and restore the beauty and function of the smile. Dental bridges are also made of porcelain and are created to match a patient’s existing teeth.
