How to maintain healthy teeth and gums

A smile free from problems such as tooth decay and periodontal disease is a healthy smile that requires less dental work–which in turn means less expense when you visit our practice. Preventative dentistry is always a priority at our office, and includes proper oral health habits at home and regular appointments with our dental staff. Drs. Scott LeSueur, Glenn LeSueur, and Charles Dodaro are here to work with you and educate you on how to keep your teeth and gums healthy!

How do I keep my smile healthy?

Below are a few recommendations in keeping your smile healthy and free from decay and disease:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. This will eliminate and remove plaque from the surfaces of the teeth and gums.
  • Floss at least once a day. Flossing is best to remove food particles that can become trapped between teeth.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks. Sugar and carbs can form acids that can result in unwanted tooth decay, or cavities.
  • See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. A deep cleaning every six months is recommended to proactively care for the teeth and gums.
  • Use a mouth guard if you play contact sports. Protecting your teeth from damage can reduce the risk of chipped, cracked, or knocked-out adult teeth that would otherwise need to be repaired or replaced.
  • Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking can not only cause gum inflammation but can significantly increase the risk of developing oral cancers.
  • Call the dentist if problems arise. The sooner problems are addressed, the less expensive and invasive they can become. Early intervention is key to a healthy smile, especially when it comes to decay and disease.
