If it has been a while since you last teeth cleaning, schedule one today with Drs of Smiles. Regular teeth cleanings not only keep your teeth polished and clean but help the dentist discover any potential problems that, if left unchecked, could create long term challenges. Here’s what you can expect from your visit.
Your Dental Cleaning
When you arrive at the dentist, a hygienist will use ultrasonic tools to scrape off any plaque or tartar on the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline. You will be holding your mouth open for a long time, so if your jaw feels pain, let the hygienist know so you can have a few minutes of rest throughout your cleaning. After the main cleaning is complete, your hygienist will rinse your mouth. Next, your teeth will be polished and buffed. You will rinse again then possibly get X-rays. These X-rays are integral to determining if you are developing any cavities in between your teeth.
After your cleaning, the hygienist will have the dentist come in to do an overall check of your dental health. The dentist will check for pockets and gaps between your gums and teeth. A periodontal probe is used to assess the depth of gum pockets. The dentist will then discuss any problem areas with you and what to expect next.
A first visit
If you have never been to the dentist before, as an adult, expect a little more time in the dentist chair during your cleaning. You may need a deeper cleaning session with the hygienist, additional X-rays, and more time with the dentist. It may feel uncomfortable while the hygienist removes tartar, but this is essential to stop the formation of gum disease and cavities.
