What to expect with dental implant surgery
The placement of dental implants requires an oral surgery procedure. During this procedure, the dentist will access the bone of the jaw in which to place the implant. Then, a hole is created in the jawbone to place the implant. This process will stimulate bone growth around the implant due to osseointegration. The bone growth that occurs is responsible for fusing the dental implant to the bone over the course of several weeks and months as the area heals. The doctor sutures the gum tissue and completes the procedure during the same appointment.
What can I expect after surgery?
We recommend having a friend or family member transport you to and from the office for your dental implant procedure. Patients often rest at home to let the sedation and anesthesia wear off. Patients are given aftercare instructions as to how to care for their smile during the healing process. Swelling and discomfort is perfectly normal and is often managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medications. Some patients may also experience stiffness of the jaw muscles or complications such as infection which need to be evaluated by a professional to ensure proper healing.
