Did you know that February is National Children’s Dental Health Month? It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of oral health in children, and it’s an excellent opportunity to start teaching your children how to take great care of their teeth!
Good oral health habits formed at an early age can last throughout adulthood and contribute to a lifetime of healthy smiles. With that in mind, let’s look at four children’s dental health tips that you can use to help your child improve their dental health this February and beyond.
1. Establish a Routine and Teach Proper Brushing Techniques
Children are more likely to brush their teeth when you make the process a consistent part of their daily routine. Along with establishing a routine for brushing their teeth, teaching your children proper brushing techniques is important. Use a dentist-approved toothbrush and toothpaste, and teach your child to brush their teeth using a gentle circular motion. Ensure they brush for at least two minutes, reaching all surfaces of their teeth.
2. Make Dental Health Fun
Children may enjoy brushing their teeth more when you make a game out of it. Try using a fun timer to ensure that they brush for at least two minutes, or you can try playing a roughly two-minute-long song and having your children brush along with the tune!
3. Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Foods and drinks that are high in sugar are one of the leading causes of cavities in children. By limiting your children’s consumption of sugary drinks and snacks and instead encouraging healthy alternatives such as fruits, vegetables, and water, you can improve their dental health while encouraging a healthier diet all the way around.
4. Lead by Example
Children learn by observing, so make sure you’re setting a positive example. Let them see you maintaining good oral hygiene habits and brushing your teeth together as a family. This will help reinforce the importance of good dental health!
