What Happens During a Root Canal?

Hearing the words “root canal” can cause a lot of worry, but the reality is actually much less intimidating than most people think. At Drs of Smiles in Mesa, Arizona, Dr. Glenn LeSueur, LVIF, uses his advanced training from the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies to make the process straightforward. Knowing what happens during root canal treatment can help calm your nerves before you sit in the chair.

Why a Root Canal Is Needed

root canal is done when the inside of your tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or damaged. This often happens because of deep decay, cracks, or injury. If we don’t treat the infection, it can spread and may lead to severe pain or tooth loss.

You might need a root canal if you notice lasting sensitivity, swelling around the tooth, or discomfort when chewing.

Step-by-Step Root Canal Process

The first step before beginning the treatment is numbing the tooth with local anesthesia. If you feel especially anxious, we offer options such as nitrous oxide or oral sedation.

Once you are relaxed and numb, your dentist creates a tiny opening in the tooth to remove the infected tissue. They’ll then carefully clean the inside of the tooth and shape it to remove bacteria and prevent further infection.

After cleaning, the empty canals are filled with a special material and sealed. This strengthens the tooth and prevents reinfection.

In many cases, your dentist will place a crown on top of the treated tooth to bring back its strength and guard it from future damage.

Pain and Recovery

Thanks to modern techniques, a root canal isn’t the painful experience people imagine. Many say it feels similar to getting a filling.

You may feel a little sore for a day or two afterward, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. You should be able to return to your normal activities right away.
