Have you been putting off important dental treatments due to a fear of the dentist? If so, you are not alone. Dental anxiety is a common condition impacting many people across the country. For some, this fear is caused by prior traumatic experiences at the dentist’s office. For others, it may be due to an active gag reflex that makes dental procedures particularly uncomfortable.
Regardless of the cause of your dental anxiety, avoiding the dentist’s office can be a serious problem. When you put off needed dental care , it can result in the development of serious health issues that require much more extensive, painful, and expensive treatments than would be necessary if you had gone to your dentist earlier or had completed your regularly scheduled preventative dental visits.
Fortunately, you do not need to let your dental phobia prevent you from receiving important dental treatments any longer. Sedation dentistry allows you to be relaxed and comfortable throughout your entire visit.
Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro offer two types of sedation dentistry to their Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Mesa/ Tempe, Arizona patients:
- Oral sedation
- Nitrous oxide
Both sedation methods are very safe and effective. With oral sedation, you will take a light sedative pill before your visit. Then prior to beginning your procedure and during your procedure, you will be given, as needed, additional medication to keep you in a relaxed, semi-conscious state. When the procedure is done, you will feel relaxed and refreshed. In many instances, you will not even remember your procedure. You will need to arrange for someone to drive you to your visit and home after your procedure.
Nitrous oxide gas is another effective method to alleviate dental anxiety. You breath the nitrous oxide through a nose piece so your mouth may remain open during dental care. Dr. LeSueur and Dr. Dodaro can adjust your level of nitrous oxide sedation during your procedure to ensure maximum comfort. Since nitrous oxide wears off much more quickly than oral sedation, you will be able to drive yourself home.
The health of your teeth and gums is too important to put off visiting the dentist any longer. Find out more about how sedation dentistry can help you overcome your fear of the dentist.
