What to expect during a general dentistry checkup

Everyone needs to have a dental evaluation completed every six months as recommended by the American Dental Association. This is because many dental conditions can be avoided with routine examinations and cleanings. The team at Drs of Smiles Gentle Family Dentistry is here to help with regular visits from our patients.

Why do I need to maintain dental checkups every six months?

There are a number of conditions that can develop within the smile when patients are not proactively protecting the teeth and gums. This includes the development of cavities and the formation of periodontal disease. Catching many of these problems early is key to treating them effectively and keeping them from causing extensive damage to the teeth, bone, and soft tissues of the mouth.

What happens during a general dental checkup?

  • X-rays. During your first appointment with the team at Drs of Smiles Gentle Family Dentistry, you will have a series of x-rays done to allow the dentist to get an idea of your current overall dental health. These are not done at every appointment unless needed.
  • Prophylaxis. Prophylaxis, or “dental cleaning,” is performed by our dental hygienists. He or she will remove plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and look for signs of disease or decay. Cleaning and polishing of the teeth is done to complete the process.
  • Evaluation. Next, you’re ready for an inspection from the dentist. After a review of the X-rays and a physical evaluation of the teeth and gums, he can let the patient know if there are any dental concerns that need attention. This is a great time for patients to ask questions as well about upcoming procedures or the possibility of certain cosmetic treatments.
