When patients speak to the team of Drs. of Smiles Gentle Family Dentistry about the imperfections in their smile, they may be encouraged to consider the advantages of placing porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are a popular option for individuals who have existing issues with the teeth near the front of the smile, known as the anterior teeth. By creating a custom facing out of ceramic, our dental team can help patients disguise these issues and enjoy improved self-confidence and beauty!
How porcelain veneers work
Porcelain veneers are essentially ceramic facings that are custom-made for patients by the team at Drs. of Smiles Gentle Family Dentistry. These facings cover problems such as teeth that are gapped, chipped, misaligned, or even permanently stained. These restorations can last a long time with proper care and maintenance and look completely natural when bonded in place.
The process of obtaining porcelain veneers
First, it is pertinent that our team of professionals evaluate a patient to determine if porcelain veneers are the best option for an individual. Veneers are best for patients who have an otherwise healthy smile free from tooth decay and periodontal disease. The imperfections addressed with porcelain veneers are commonly on the anterior teeth that are seen when patients laugh, smile, and talk. These teeth need to be prepared before the veneers are made. During the preparation visit, the dentist will remove a very thin layer of the enamel from the noticeable side of the tooth. Then, impressions are made. These impressions, or molds of the teeth, are used by the dental laboratory to create the porcelain veneer. This can take a week or two, so our dentists will place a temporary veneer until patients can return for the bonding of their final restoration. The entire process ends with patients leaving our practice with their brand new, brilliantly beautiful smile!
