How do I keep my smile healthy?
Below are a few recommendations in keeping your smile healthy and free from decay and disease:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. This will eliminate and remove plaque from the surfaces of the teeth and gums.
- Floss at least once a day. Flossing is best to remove food particles that can become trapped between teeth.
- Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks. Sugar and carbs can form acids that can result in unwanted tooth decay, or cavities.
- See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. A deep cleaning every six months is recommended to proactively care for the teeth and gums.
- Use a mouth guard if you play contact sports. Protecting your teeth from damage can reduce the risk of chipped, cracked, or knocked-out adult teeth that would otherwise need to be repaired or replaced.
- Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking can not only cause gum inflammation but can significantly increase the risk of developing oral cancers.
- Call the dentist if problems arise. The sooner problems are addressed, the less expensive and invasive they can become. Early intervention is key to a healthy smile, especially when it comes to decay and disease.
